Business Intelligence focuses particularly on data stored in a structured form, such as tables or XML documents. 80% of all data is stored in unstructured - or semi-structured form. It should be thought
for example documents, audio files, html pages, video files, picture files, paper documents, etc...
This unstructured data is often stored in so-called Document Management Systems (DMS) or Enterprise Content Management (ECM) systems. A Document Management System is generally a database where unstructured - and semi-structured documents are stored and retrievable on the basis of index attributes (metadata) such as author, document date, category and status.

 

Within the discipline of Enterprise Information Management (EIM), the worlds of structured data, unstructured data and everything in between is united to a central information hub for all types of data. The Unstructured Information Management Architecture (UIMA) platform is often used to structure to some extent all of the unstructured data.
